You can’t just make a female Harry dubois. An essential element of his character is his inability to perform masculinity, i.e. being divorced. A female Harry Dubois would need to be a failure at some similar feminine societal role. Like she would need to have an estranged daughter that she talks to like a dog and a best friend.

I’d have a hard time seeing such an exploration happen in a big city detective mystery. Maybe a Miss Marple-esque village setting could work?

Harry’s amnesia and role as a cop makes him an outsider to the community, but since feminine societal roles often are far more social, pre-established relationships could work better for exploring the themes. Perhaps a similar feminine archetype of the outsider that still fulfills a certain nurturing role, but is shunned for it?

Final nitpick is that a dog is a bit masc-coded, so perhaps another animal could be substituted?

nobody ever believes me when I list off all of the ways that humans are significantly less sexually dimorphic than people seem to believe and it drives me batshit insane. “you’re denying the biological reality of sex” well you’re sticking your fingers in your ears and saying lalalala every time anyone presents you with data that confirms that women and men aren’t really that different. and refusing to come to terms with the two-way relationship between the “biological” and “social” worlds. I think one of us is ignoring the biological sciences here and it isn’t me

the avatar universes beyond set is looking like it’s exclusively going to be based on the show, ignoring Korra, the comics, the prequel books etc. and it feels like we’re already hitting a problem with universes beyond of the vast majority of IPs not really having enough side characters and extensive lore and memorable moments to fill a set plus supplementals. like… every moment, every throaway line, every background character who shows up for one scene gets a card. its wild. maybe im just the sourpuss here but man i’m not enjoying being fed 20 year old jokes awkwardly restated through flavor text.

also that said i feel like both avatar and spiderman they’ve led (more or less) with the beginner product for some reason? which means our introduction is mostly watered down commons. i do think there’s some interesting stuff here (Firebending is very interesting as a mechanic to build around, and Airbending is a similarly clean bit of interaction, essentially bounce minus) but i still feel underwhelmed

today’s episode of ‘what the fuck is youtube recommending me now’:

a video titled 'Can you beat Pokémon Ruby with only LANDORUS?’. I see the title and say to my wife 'it would be kind of funny if the answer was just “no, because Landorus isn’t in pokemon ruby”’.

my expectation, to be clear, is that this is someone modding pokemon ruby to include Landorus and then doing a solo playthrough in the manner of any number of other pokemon challenge youtubers. My wife and I have an extended discussion about which pokemon you would expect to have problems soloing an entire main series pokemon game, assuming you hacked them in as a starter and allowed HM mons that don’t participate in fights.

I notice the length of the video. It’s 28 seconds long. I think to myself “wait, is it really just that joke?”. I do not click on the video. I put the matter out of my mind until the next day, when I see it again.

Curiosity gets the better of me. I click through to the channel, “Impossible Game Challenges Daily”

someone has been posting a video every day with the title “Can you beat Pokémon Ruby with Only X?” for every pokemon, in pokedex order. As far as I can tell (I haven’t sampled that many videos), almost all of them are near identical: A voiceover starts narrating the premise of the challenge over the first few bits of gameplay (sped up), until they reach the starter selection screen. The voiceover tells us: “Everything goes pretty well at first, but we run into a slight problem when we have to choose our starter. It turns out X is not actually an option in this game. Looks like this challenge is impossible.”

The audio is the same for every video, with just the pokemon name very obviously edited in. every pokemon is declared to be the author’s favourite pokemon.

there are compilation videos for all the kanto, johto, hoenn, and sinnoh pokemon. the unova one will be releasing soon!

(you might have the obvious follow-up question: since every challenge is declared impossible at the starter selection screen, what are the videos for treecko, torchic, and mudkip like? well, they are slight deviations from the formula, although still about half a minute in length. torchic and treecko declare the challenge is impossible because you need surf to progress and neither of them can learn it. mudkip declares the challenge impossible because at the weather institute you are given a castform, and so your party isn’t just mudkip)

also, yes, you may have astutely noticed that’s despite the title talking about pokemon ruby the thumbnails show the box art for pokemon sapphire

“we want to protect the kids!!”

— in a way that will also protect them from their parents & guardians right?

“what”

— if a parent or guardian wanted to abuse their child, would what you’re trying to do make it harder for them?

“…”

— *pulls out a chart that shows 76% of abused children were victimized by a parent or legal guardian* will what you’re advocating for make it easier for the majority child abusers, which is overwhelmingly parents & guardians, to get away with abuse?

“idk what this has to do with anything we just want to restrict children’s freedoms more & give parents more control over them. you know. to protect them from adults who want to abuse them”

Every. Single. Time.
